Importing the Blackboard version of the tutorial
The VLE version of the tutorial has been created using Coursegenie software (http://www.coursegenie.com) - you can import these files as BlackBoard Unpackaged files.
Save the Blackboard 'zip' files to your computer. Add an item to your Course Documents area. In the Content section, browse and select the appropriate zip file, then select 'unpackage this file' from the 'Special Action' drop down. After you've clicked on submit it should open a new window where you select the opening file, i.e. index.html
Importing the tutorial as WebCT html pages
The VLE version of the tutorial has been created using Coursegenie software (http://www.coursegenie.com)
If you are using WebCT v3.8 or earlier, save the relevant files to your computer from the links at the top of this page. You will then need to create the Content Modules manually. In WebCT, upload the zip file of content to the course and unzip it into a folder. Create a new empty Content Module, select the HTML files and add them to the Content Module.
If you are using WebCT v4.0 or later with the Content Migration Utility v2.0 or later, save the relevant files to your computer from the links at the top of this page. In WebCT, upload the zip file of content to the course but do not unzip it. In WebCT, go to Designer Links/Manage Course and click on Import Content. Type a name for the Content Module and browse to the zip file just uploaded. Select WebCT for the package type. Choose where the link should be displayed. Click on Import.
Welsh Translation
This Welsh translation was provided by Coleg Meirion-Dwyfor, and was created using Course Genie (now Wimba Create). It has been tested using Moodle, but should be suitable for use in other VLE software. Download the zip file into Moodle and unzip from within their site. Then 'add a file or website' with the file 'index_w' as the target, there is an index file for each of the sections in their respective folders.

Ideas for using the VLE version
Using a VLE, you could choose whether or not to use all the sections or release them in stages as the students build up their skills. For example, you could ask them to work through "Introducing the Internet Detective" (a combination of the "The Brief" and "What's the story?") prior to a face-to-face class. This could be followed by completion of "the Good, the Bad and the Ugly" as part of a blended learning session in which you give a "wrap around" presentation and demonstration of "the good" sources of information you want to encourage your students to use.
Alternatively, you might wish to customise the pages, for example, by adding links to the pages in "the good" section to examples of electronic journals, bibliographic databases or e-prints relevant to their subjects of study. It is fine to do this, provided that you acknowledge our work by including the metadata and copyright statement.
You might want to increase interactivity, for example by using the communication tools to answer students' questions online in between classes or asking them to share results of a search on the Internet on a given topic in preparation for a subsequent class in which you focus on the practical skills of evaluating the results, using the "Detective work" and "Get on the case" sections. They may enjoy working in pairs on the examples in "Get on the case". If you are short of time you might ask them to focus on one example per pair. If you have more time, you could give the students a selection of sites including some examples of hoax ones and ask them practice their skills to identify reliable and hoax sites.
The tracking tools available in a VLE will help you to be able to see whether the students have completed the tutorial or not. Knowing that you are able to monitor their progress may help to provide an incentive for them and you will be able to check if they are having difficulties. You may wish assign some marks for successful completion of the tutorial as part of formal assessment or for students to complete to show as evidence of preparedness for university study in a portfolio. We have created two additional quizzes which you may wish to use within your VLE for this purpose.
Support
These files were created in June 2006 (Welsh version in July 2008) and are maintained separately from the main website, so contents may differ. Please note these VLE packages are supplied 'as is' and we are unable to offer individual support on their use.
